Chalcopyrite Peacock Ore is a metal that displays vibrant blues, purples, teals, and other color shades when the surface tarnishes. In most cases the chalcopyrite takes many years to naturally tarnish when exposed to elements, so to speed up the natural process freshly mined Chalcopyrite is dipped in acid then rinsed off completely with water which causes the metal to naturally tarnish much faster. This process is used on most commercial Chalcopyrite Peacock Ore on the market and you can NOT tumble these stones since it will remove the tarnish on the surface which is what causes the intensely vivid colors. The surface color can also flake off if rubbed too hard, similar to how you can wipe rust off a piece of rusty iron exposing the natural metal. If this happens to Chalcopyrite you will see the natural golden color of the Chalcopyrite under where the tarnish has flaked or been rubbed off.
